Use MagicSchool.ai to Build Complete Lesson Plans

What This Does

MagicSchool.ai's Lesson Plan tool generates a standards-aligned, complete lesson plan with hook, instruction, practice activities, and closing assessment — turning a 45-minute planning task into a 5-minute one.

Before You Start

• You have a free MagicSchool.ai account (magicschool.ai — free for individual educators)
• You're logged in
• You know the standard or learning objective you're teaching

Steps

1. Find the Lesson Plan tool

Log in to MagicSchool.ai → In the search bar type "Lesson Plan" → Select "Lesson Plan Generator"

2. Enter your lesson details

Fill in the fields: Grade level, Subject, Topic/Learning objective, Time available (e.g., 45 minutes), and any special context (e.g., "mixed-ability class," "we just finished a unit on X," "students struggle with Y"). The more context you add, the more useful the output.

3. Generate the lesson plan

Click "Generate." MagicSchool will produce a formatted lesson plan including: an Anticipatory Set (hook), Learning Objective, Instruction sequence, Guided practice activity, Independent practice or partner work, Closing activity, and a Materials list.

4. Review and customize

Read through the plan. The hook and closing suggestions are typically the most useful — these are the parts teachers most often skip when planning under time pressure. Adjust the timing estimates to match your actual class pacing. Delete anything that doesn't fit your instructional approach.

5. Save to Google Docs

Copy the lesson plan → Paste into a new Google Doc → Use "Help me write" in Google Docs to expand any section that feels thin, or to reformat as a sub plan if needed.

Scenario: You need a lesson plan for introducing the water cycle to 5th graders. You have 50 minutes and a mix of learners including 4 students with IEPs.

What you enter: Grade: 5, Subject: Science, Topic: Introduction to the Water Cycle, Time: 50 minutes, Context: Mixed ability; 4 students with IEPs need visual supports

What you get: A complete 50-minute plan with a hook (showing a short time-lapse of condensation forming on a glass), explicit instruction with diagram, partner activity with sentence frames for ELL/IEP support, and an exit ticket question.

Tips

• Add "include differentiation suggestions for students 2-3 grade levels below" to get built-in modifications without a separate step
• The Materials list is often incomplete — add your own school-specific materials before printing
• Use the "Rephrase for Sub" button (if available) to instantly convert any lesson plan into a sub-friendly version
